Annalie Basson (M.Phys.T (research), B.Sc. Physiotherapy, OMT certificate) is a physiotherapist in private practice in Pretoria, South Africa. She has been working in private practice for the past 24 years. Her main interests are low back pain, neck pain, headaches and patients with chronic pain. Annalie has been active on committees of the OMTG since 1985 and was chairperson of the national executive committee of the OMTG from 1998 – 2004. She has been course leader for the OMT course in Pretoria since 1998 and lectures on this and continuing education courses. She is a member of the South African chapter of the International Association for the Study of Pain. She is the chairperson of the research Foundation of the South African Society of Physiotherapy. Duncan Reid [MHSc(Hons), BSc, Dip MT, PGDipHSc (Manipulative Physiotherapy), MNZCP] is a Principal Lecturer in Musculo-skeletal Physiotherapy and Head of the School of Rehabilitation and Occupation Studies of the Auckland University of Technology. He is co programme leader for the Post-graduate programme in Musculo-skeletal Physiotherapy within the Master of Health Science Programme. Duncan has had 27 years of clinical experience in Musculo-skeletal Physiotherapy. He owned and operated a private practice in New Zealand for 17 years before moving to a full time teaching position at the School of Physiotherapy in 2000. His main areas of interest are in manual and manipulative therapy especially manipulation to the cervical spine, a topic he has taught both nationally and internationally. He also has significant interest in viscoelasticity of muscle tissue and stretching, areas he has researched and published in. He has also recently completed his doctoral research investigating the effects of stretching interventions in people with osteoarthritis of the knee. Duncan’s experience in Sports Physiotherapy is also extensive. He is the past president of the NZ Manipulative Physiotherapists Association and has been Chief Physiotherapist for the NZ team at the last 4 Olympic Games. He is currently one of the IFOMT executives. He has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences related to Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation. Erik graduated as a physiotherapist in 1984, specialized in sportsphysiotherapy in 1991 and graduated as a manual therapist in 1992 He works as a clinician in his own private practice in his home town as well as in a major sports rehab centre where he works with elite athletes. He is head of the continuing education & lifelong learning division of the SOMT educational centre for musculoskeletal therapies in Amersfoort, the major educational program in manual therapy in The Netherlands, where he also teaches and oversees the mentored clinical practice program. After organizing the national manual therapy congresses in The Netherlands for many years, he was the congress committee chairman of the 2008 IFOMT congress in Rotterdam. Dr. Ken Olson is the president and managing partner of the physical therapy private practice Northern Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Associates in DeKalb, Illinois, USA. Ken completed the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences’ Master of Science and Doctor of Health Science degrees in orthopaedic manual physical therapy. In addition to being a board certified clinical specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy, he is fellowship trained in manual physical therapy from the University of St. Augustine. Additionally, he is an adjunct assistant professor for Marquette University and is the author of the textbook titled: Manual Physical Therapy of the Spine published by Saunders, Elsevier; 2009. In addition to being elected to the IFOMPT executive in 2008, Ken was the USA member organization delegate to IFOMT in 2004. Ken served on the executive committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (USA member organization to IFOMT) from 1995 – 2006 and was President from 2002 – 2005. He also serves on the American Physical Therapy Association’s Manipulation task force and was a co-author of the Manipulation Education Manual, a resource designed to assist physical therapy faculty to integrate high velocity thrust manipulation into entry-level physical therapy curriculum in the United States. Ken has published in numerous peer – reviewed Journals and presented courses throughout the United States in the manual physical therapy diagnosis and management of spine and TMJ disorders. Michael graduated with a B.Sc. in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, in 1979 and has been in private practice since that time. He has been a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapists since 1986, CAMT is the Canadian IFOMPT MO. His areas of clinical interest include spinal manipulation, postural rehabilitation, muscle imbalance therapy (ala Sahrmann), and TMD, working closely with dental specialists for 25 years. He received his M.Ed. from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Canada, in 2005, specializing in Adult Education. His working project was entitled “Applying the Gold Standard in a Bronze Medal World: The Challenges of Integrating Validated Research into Continuing Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Physical Therapy Education”. Prior to becoming the President of IFOMPT from 2004 to 2008, he was the Canadian IFOMT MO delegate from 2000-2004, and during this time he worked closely with website developers on the IFOMT website, www.ifomt.org. He has lectured at the schools of physiotherapy and dentistry, Dalhousie University, has taught continuing courses locally and nationally, and has also lectured internationally on TMD syndromes. In 1996 and 1997 he lectured in Kuwait as part of the Dalhousie Kuwait project. In 2006 he was voted Nova Scotia “Physiotherapist of the Year” by his peers. Vicki started her working life by training as a Registered Nurse at Tauranga Hospital, New Zealand in 1978, continuing on to be staff nurse in both Orthopaedics and Special Care Nursery. She then worked as a practice nurse for 2 years in Morrinsville before having her 2 children. To fit in with parenthood, she worked part time in a Real Estate office as office administrator for 2 years, progressing to Executive Officer of the New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapists Association (NZMPA) in 1998. In June 2000 Vicki was approached to work 4 hours per week as Secretariat of IFOMPT, a role which has continued to grow and is now 10 hours per week. She is also currently joint Executive Officer for NZMPA on a job share basis 14 hours per week. Vicki completed a Diploma in Event Management in 2007 at the Auckland University of Technology. After working in neuromusculoskeletal clinical practice Alison moved into education full time in 1993. An MSc in Manipulative Therapy provided the background for development of her teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy. A Doctorate in Education completed in 2004 at the University of Warwick, UK has enabled Alison to integrate educational practice with neuromusculokeletal physiotherapy. Contact Alison
Dr Darren A. Rivett, PhD, MAppSc(ManipPhty), GradDipManipTher, BAppSc(Phty)
Dr Rivett is the Head of the School of Health Sciences and Foundation Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has been a recognised manipulative physiotherapist since 1986, managed several private practices in Sydney and coordinated postgraduate programs in manipulative physiotherapy at two Australasian universities. Dr Rivett is presently the Chairman of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia (MPA), the IFOMPT Member Organisation for Australia, and has served on professional standards bodies in both Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Rivett is the co-editor of the successful text ‘Clinical Reasoning for Manual Therapists’ published by Elsevier and is presently working with colleagues on an evidence-based text on the Mulligan Concept. He is the lead author of the Australian Physiotherapy Association’s ‘Clinical Guidelines for Assessing Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency in the Management of Cervical Spine Disorders’. His main research interests are the benefits and risks of manual therapy in the cervical spine (including the validity of pre-manipulative screening) and clinical reasoning in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, areas in which he has extensively published and been invited to present both nationally and internationally. Dr Rivett is also a former Associate Editor for the journal Manual Therapy. He is a third generation manipulative practitioner.
John Langendoen, Member SC IFOMPTJohn Langendoen, MSc, Grad.OMT, B.PT, is a private practitioner, an international consultant sports physiotherapist and lecturer in musculo-skeletal physiotherapy. He is a member of the IMTA teaching faculty and involved in various post-graduate programmes in OMT, while having led the OMT educational committee of the German DVMT 10 years till 2007.
John has 32 years of clinical experience in musculo-skeletal Physiotherapy. He owned and operated a private practice in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in the eighties, and in Kempten, Germany since 1989.
His main areas of interest are in manual and manipulative therapy, especially in the thoraco-cervical and cranio-mandibular region, topics he has taught both nationally and internationally. Thoracic outlet syndromes were the final topic of his MSc in pain management study at the UWCM in Cardiff. He is leading the interdisciplinary forum of cranio-facial syndromes IFCFS in Germany, an area of his interest since 20 years, educating health professionals towards optimal cooperation in this complex multifacetal field, also resulting in journal articles and international lectures, e.g. at IFOMPT conferences since 1996.
John’s experience in sports physiotherapy is extensive, ranging from being a therapist for players of Sparta Rotterdam in the eighties towards being a member of the medical staff of the Korean National Team at the FIFA World Cup 2002 and 2006 as well as of the Russian Icehockey Team since 2005. He has a special interest in pre-season screening and management of athletes with dysfunctional structures, recurrent injuries and suboptimal movement patterns. Over the years, the Korean experience with elastic taping has led to international recognized seminars on assessment related functional kinetic taping within the scope of OMT and sports physiotherapy.
He is currently one of the members of the IFOMPT Standards Committee.

Karen BeetonPhD, MPhy, BSc(Hons), FCSP, MMACPI am currently an Associate Head in the School of Health and Emergency Professions at the University of Hertfordshire and Professional Lead for physiotherapy. My role includes teaching, management and leading on professional and commercial activities. The School offers a range of health related undergraduate and postgraduate Masters programmes including physiotherapy. Successful students who complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Physiotherapy (Neuromusculoskeletal) are eligible to join the MACP. From 2009 we will also offer an MSc in Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation. I am passionate about physiotherapists developing skills in qualitative research and currently teach qualitative methods at undergraduate and post graduate level as well as supervise undergraduate students who undertake a small qualitative group project in their final year. I also supervise Masters level qualitative projects.
I have been a member of the MACP since 1988 and was Chair of the MACP from 1997-2001. I completed a Masters in Physiotherapy Studies at the University of Queensland in 1993 and completed my PhD, a qualitative study exploring the impact of haemophilia on quality of life, in 2005.
I have been a member of the Standards Committee of IFOMPT since 2000. In addition I am a member of the Editorial Committee of Manual Therapy journal and am responsible for the masterclass section. Manual Therapy has recently increased its impact factor and retained its place as third in the rankings of rehabilitation journals. I also sit on the Editorial Board of Haemophilia journal. I am an external examiner for BSc (Hons) physiotherapy programme in Glasgow and am a past external examiner for a Masters physiotherapy programme at the University of Brighton. I have published a number of papers in peer reviewed journals and was the editor for two books of collated Manual Therapy masterclasses, one on the vertebral column and one on the peripheral regions.
I was very honoured to be awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in November 2008 for my contribution to professional practice, promotion of education and standards in clinical practice, research and development of the knowledge base of the profession.
